It’s always fun to find an influential book list in my stacks of papers! Here is a wonderful list by none other than Susan Schaeffer Macaulay that picked I picked up at a L’Abri conference and have consulted many times over the years. The list was printed in another great resource for mature teens and up, Critique by Ransom Fellowship.
One of these I read aloud in our school this year and it was a favorite and I plan to write a post on it soon. Are any of the titles here new to you? Is there a favorite of yours here? Share your thoughts in the comments!

We loved Understood Betsy, Treasures of the Snow and just started Caddie Woodlawn. To be honest, I haven't read many of these but am so looking forward to reading them in the future!

What a delicious list. I especially love the British authors that I haven't heard of on here!!! Thanks for sharing this list, Nancy. 🙂

Love, love, love "The Wind in the Willows"…..a must read-aloud for every family!!! Just finished "The Witch of Blackbird Pond" with my son, just started "Johnny Tremain" (now my third time reading aloud this fantastic Revolutionary War book). Can you glean that we are studying American History this year?? Also working our way through the Little House books. Read the first one to same said son, thinking if he didn't like it (you know, the whole girls as main characters aren't cool for boys idea), then we would move on, but here we are on book 6! Homeschooling my last child…..so many books, so little time!!!

I couldn't agree more. I think I have read Wind in the Willows aloud 4 times. I still have 3 at home with about 5 more years to go. I love homeschooling and life with CM so I don't think it will ever stop!

Rumer (not Remer) Godden wrote The Diddakoi, but Susan Coolidge wrote What Katy Did.

Thanks for clarifying that for everyone, Anne! (I daresay there are a few more typos on those pages!)

Wonderful list! I had to laugh over her desire for us to "spare the children Walt Disney heresy". Perfect!
I have just read and loved Patricia St John's autobiography. After reading her books to my children for years, it was an especially good book.
Thank you, Nancy!
