Girl in a Hammock, Winslow Homer, 1873 |
It should be – a rest, that is. It is a change from the normal school routine. We sleep later, stay up later, read and play much more. While I’ve been refreshed and enjoyed things unique to summer, it hasn’t been very slow. A graduation and then this upcoming wedding, not to mention the typical activities of 4 littles, have not given me much chance to slow down. Alas, a change is a good as a rest. Did I mention the LER?
I hope to visit Carl Sandburg’s home during our upcoming travels. I’ll let you know if we make it. I like to “hear” his unique voice in my head as I read this poem –
I hope you are enjoying your summer and that it is a Sabbath of sorts for you. I need to look into getting a hammock, I think. Meanwhile, please enjoy these pictures by Amy Fieldler taken at the 2012 CLUSA (ChildLight USA, the former name of the Charlotte Mason Institute) conference at Gardner-Webb University this past June.

I spent many summers down the road from Carl's house at Bonclarken (my childhood church retreat center). It's a lovely place with an old, charming hotel. If you see it, pull in, roll down the windows and you can smell my childhood. 🙂 There is also a yummy donut place around there!

Thanks for the tip, Stephanie. I'm always up for donuts AND the smell of childhood! I do hope we get to the Sandburg house – I'm sure I'll write about it if we do!

Wishing you rest in between exciting events. Just a breathing in and out! This slowing down does wonders for the soul, and connects us back to the stride of Christ. Summer sabbath–love your title.

Just breathe…great advice as I sit here typing and getting ready 25 hours in the car!
Hugs to you, Pam! I'll wave as we pass MI!

Summer is a different kind of busy and I do rejoice in it : D Thanks for the reminder. Oh, I can't wait for a June that I can join all that wonderful CM experience and knowledge! And your LER, one of my favorite topics too!!
sageparnassus says
Thanks, Jenny! Yes, boy-oh-boy would there be a happy group of ladies if you make it to the LER some year…

I somehow misplaced my hammock!!! How does one misplace a hammock, I wonder?! 😉 I love that painting and that poem…I'm going to add it to my nature journal I think. 🙂 My summers are always busier than I like, but it is a good busy and a fun busy with stops in between…
When do you start up the 'ole "learning shop" again? 😉

Dear Amy,
We will start up with lessons in September this year. That's later than I like, but we have a few big events in August!

I heartily recommend a hammock. I was pleased to read this post; I am writing in a similar vein on my blog. The Sandburg poem is perfect.
sageparnassus says
Thank you, Ellen! I also want a daybed for our porch…maybe someday.
