At the 2021 Living Education Retreat, I delivered the opening conversazione on the theme “Meditation” which set the tone for the retreat. Today, I would like to share the audio of that presentation. Charlotte Mason put a heavy emphasis on meditation for the parent and the child. This talk explores what she meant by meditation and looks deeply at this neglected Christian practice. There is a not-surprising correlation between how we read Scripture and our school books! And the phrase, “read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest” might come to life in a new way for you.
Please listen and see what Mason called “the most important part of the preparation of the mother”! The slides that accompany this talk are also below, as well as the picture for the picture study. I hope you enjoy listening along and are encouraged to pursue Christian meditation in your life, no matter what season you are in.
Warmly,
Nancy
Below is a print of Three Women in Church by Leibl which we do a picture study on during the talk.

Thank you for all of this and for making it available to all! Wish I could have attended but this is a fantastic way to be a part from afar. Such great and inspiring reminders of the importance and role of meditating on The Word of God through the Holy Spirit as believers. Charlotte’s godly wisdom and advice sometimes seems boundless. Thank you for uncovering another aspect of her teaching and for generously sharing it all!

Thank you so much, Nancy! This was just what I needed to hear – inspiration for refocusing my Bible and prayer time and a curiosity for digging back into Scale How Meditations.

Thank you for posting Nancy! It was so disappointing to find out that I had the “Rona” and could not travel to join you all at the LER. Now I can share a piece of it, thank you:) I haven’t listened to the conversazione yet but this topic recently struck me like a lightening bolt as I read Mason’s commentary in the “Scale How Meditations”. “We let the truth remain with us if it will, but we do not stir up our sluggish minds to keep it, to go over what we have heard, point by point, many times, examining ourselves as to how far we are living upon the new truth or the new aspect of truth which has come to us.” Meditation No. 19. How humbling to find that I can so easily listen to a sermon or read scripture and walk away without really taking the time to meditate on it. Definitely a new habit to be created!

Thank you for your insights that you have gleaned from SHM. Yes, quite convicting and life-changing to me, too.
Warmly,
