As we begin to plan for the fall term it is good to remind ourselves that we need to think through what we are doing and not just follow what others have prescribed for a Charlotte Mason education. This was the posture of the Parents’ National Education Union, Charlotte Mason’s national organization for those applying her principles and following the programmes. Wow.
I can finally understand what you are saying. Living by the Spirit, not by the letter. How beautiful. How am in awe of the faith this takes. Principles guide us by giving us some basic natural laws that are to be followed but can be applied effectively in each homeschool. ,

I also love the 2 solutions you offer when a mother is having a problem in your homeschooling – look at the principle that is at stake for your situation (and not to what people or an organization says) and pray for an answer or direction from the Holy Spirit.
I love that Miss Mason also thought through a problem to its root before deciding what to do. I have been doing this after reading the first 3 chapters of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Cove.y. It really helps a person to get to the bottom of a problem and often the solution is very clear at that point.
Love this! Live by principles based on truth that can be applied freshly according to the new needs and situations that come. I appreciate her requiring us to think and live by principles and the Holy Spirit in our daily lives!
So much of what Charlotte Mason shares is resonated in Stephen Covey’s book I mentioned above. His book has helped me to understand her philosophy much more. And I appreciate all that she has said with a much greater depth.
And I must also say thank you to you, Nancy, for diligently pointing us to these truths as you share what you have learned. In previous years, I truly did not understand why you would require me (and all of us mothers) to think, know the educational principles and follow the Spirit in what we should do for our homeschooling. I just wanted to know the recipe or the ‘precept’ that would help me to know how to do something in my homeschooling. But NOW! I get it! It has taken time to build my own character to get to this point. So many things make sense now. I am thankful you did not compromise when I was not understanding. I am so thankful for your diligence in sharing the truths of a Charlotte Mason education. THANK YOU!
