To brighten your March, here is a superb, 10-page reading list for children by Jerram Barrs, Professor of Christian Studies and Contemporary Culture and Resident Scholar of Francis A. Schaeffer Institute at Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis (used with permission). He’s also one of my favorite speakers at the Rochester L’abri conferences, where he shared this list. Thank you for the great list. Carry on Mr. Bowditch is one of our favorites. Visiting the Bowditch house and church in Salem this summer was the highlight of our east coast visit.
Please be aware that Good Night Mister Tom is not suitable for most eight year olds it deals with abuse and twisted attitudes to morals and s-x home schooling enables us to preserve our childrens childhoods for much longer than schooled children that said this is a very disturbing book for any child and I have not offered as a read to my older childen yet. It is a great book but one you must preread and then knowing the content offer (or not) at the appropriate age. So many great books missing from this list (thanks for publishing it anyway, I love scaning book lists looking for something I haven't heard of or finding a childhood favorite that I had forgotten) I wish someone would do an open list where we could add the dozens of great living books we all know. I am so delighted to see the Children's Reading List by Jerram Barrs posted again, Nancy! Thank you! Many years ago I heard Jerram Barrs speak at a L'Abri Conference in Rochester, Minnesota, on literature. He lectured on C.S. Lewis and his Chronicles of Narnia, as well as on Shakespeare and I think on Jane Austen as well. I really enjoy hearing him speak. Many years ago I read a book Jerram Barrs co-authored with Ranald Macaulay (husband of Susan Schaeffer Macaulay)entitled Being Human. It is a wonderful book and was so helpful to me at the time. I would enjoy reading it again.
